ICDP TRAINING IN AGENTINA, BRAZIL AND PARAGUAY

During October Lailah Armstrong visited Latin America working with S.D.Argentina under the leadership of Rasjid Cesar, to deliver the second phase of training seminars for the International Child Development Programme (ICDP).

Susila Dharma(Britain) has provided financial support to Lailah for both trips. Below are some details from Illene Pevec who is in touch with CeLuAn project who are organising the seminar in Brazil.

ILLENE PEVEC’s article
"I just wanted to give you all a positive and hopeful update given the very sorry state of the world right now. SD in Argentina with no money at all has organised ICDP seminars in South America for the second time this year. ICDP teaches caregivers of children how to speak and care for them in a loving and respectful manner, honouring their individuality and way of seeing and perceiving and helping them to capitalise on their strengths. Santo Angelo, Brazil, is the venue of one meeting organised by CeLuAn, an educational group. Afonso, Ignez and Teresinha, 3 Subud members, have drawn together all the major NGOs and Government groups who work with children including the Nobel nominated Pastoral da Crianca. They expect over 200 people to the open lecture and around 40 will take the weekend long seminar".

A big newspaper article in Santo Angela said that over half the town’s population of 76,000 live in conditions considered ‘at risk’. The people coming to the seminar, for the most part, are those who serve these families.(extract of report received from SDIA).

Extracts from summary of 79th meeting of Susila Dharma (B) 22/23 Sept.2001:

  • Further donation of £500 agreed for Lemba Imbu school in R.D.Congo. Oxfam UK has rebuilt the school building and SD(B) will be contacting Oxfam to see if a partnership can be established for future support for this school.
  • Board agreed payment of £176. to enable ICDP training booklets to be printed in Dnepropetrovsk. SD(B) is exploring ways of helping support the children’s home which opened on 24th August with 10 babies. The next group will be admitted once the quarantine period for the first group has expired.
  • Future funding strategies for Mithra schools were discussed because present funding obtained from DFID runs out in June 2002. Raphael is working on it!
  • The Board agreed to send £1,000 to support the Protema distribution programme. Protema is a food supplement rich in protein which helps malnourished babies. It has been developed in Java and is now beginning to expand into Kalimantan.
  • The Board has been asked to consider helping to fund a special hoist and bath for immobile elderly for installation at Wisma Mulia. We are exploring ways of working with others to raise the necessary sum.
