SUMMARY OF 80th MEETING OF SUSILA DHARMA (BRITAIN) 7-9 DECEMBER 2001

  •  A separate full-day meeting was held on fundraising strategy.  Tasks and targets, and objectives for the next 3 years, were agreed. One important research task was to identify appropriate outside funding bodies and ascertain their fundraising criteria. In addition to setting up a fundraising committee – consisting of Raphael Bate, Sachlan North, Michael Wisnom and Mark McElroy - it was recognised that it would help considerably if a research person could be found to assist with this.

  • Raphael Bate will be working for the Mithra project as a volunteer from January until April 2002. As well as assisting with training in India, he will be doing another sponsored cycle ride, this time from Vancouver to San Diego in North America. Further outside funding is needed for Mithra by June 2002 and we will be applying to the Community Fund (previously known as the National Lotteries Charities Fund) and other funding bodies.

  • The application to the Community Fund by the Kalimantan Support Group, which operates as a sub-committee of Susila Dharma (Britain), has been successful. We have received a grant of £96,000 for the next 2 years of the sustainable livelihoods in Central Kalimantan programme. Sachlan North is visiting Central Kalimantan in January to look at this project and other potential projects there

  • The board approved payment for a pilot project for the International Child Development Programme in Argentina. This might be delayed because of the current financial crisis in Argentina. The ICDP project in Ukraine was continuing.

  • Mufridah Williams is planning to work with the ICDP project in Angola later this year.

  • We have made contact through SDIA with Oxfam UK’s office in the Congo, with a view to providing further support to the Lemba Imbu school and other projects in that country.

  • Salamah Subiotto has resigned as a director and trustee of Susila Dharma (Britain). The board thanked Salamah for all her work for SD(B) and expressed the hope that she would continue to be associated with us as a friend of SD(B).

  • Our next meeting will be from 15-17 February, and will he held at Wisma Mulia.
