SUMMARY OF MEETING OF SUSILA DHARMA (BRITAIN) 25th MARCH 2006

The Board is continuing to make contact with Raphael Skerratt with the intention of having a joint meeting with SES representatives in Brecon.

It was agreed to renew SD(B)’s membership of BOND (British Overseas NGOs for Development) although we have not taken an active part in their activities during the past year.

Laura had attended one day of the SDIA Board meeting in Lewes where our relationship with the projects in R.D. Congo was discussed.  We are still trying to get clarification on the issue of land ownership for agricultural or other use.  A Congolese man, Seraphin, has sent a request for funds to buy land to grow more artemisia for the treatment of malaria.  He has successfully grown some on a small area of land.  No firm decision has yet been made about this, and we are still trying to put him in touch with ‘anamed’ – the company who are promoting the growth of artemisia, and who have a representative in Congo.

The Board agreed to fund the first phase of Virna’s ICDP project at Mina Clavero, Argentina, with £890.  We agreed to ask for a report on this before deciding about the second phase at c.£1,500.

Another large ICDP programme is beginning in Colombia in Huila province, funded by UNICEF and other participating organisations.  SD(B) has agreed to donate £4,000 in two tranches as our contribution to this project.

The Board agreed to fund the first phase of an ICDP project run by Amata and Chayatun at Amanecer at £1,400.  This will target local mothers.

Sachlan reported that the situation on growing artemisia in Kalimantan was more hopeful than we had thought. The Indonesian authorities are now saying that there is no ban on growing the plants but they should not be used to treat malaria.  This is because of the fear that uncontrolled use for the treatment of malaria may lead to the disease becoming resistant, as it has done with previous treatments.

KSG is exploring the possibility of importing into Kalimantan  bednets impregnated with anti-mosquito insecticide which have been developed in Tanzania.  Instead of being sprayed with insecticide they have been impregnated in the manufacturing stage and will remain effective for 4-5 years.  SD(B) would be willing to support this initiative.

A Spring newsletter has been distributed to groups, and another one is planned for June.  If you haven’t seen one, it is on our website.

SD(B) Board would be interested in hearing from any member who feels motivated to get more closely involved with susila dharma work, either as a Trustee or active supporter.  We hope to have a stall at National Congress in August and would be grateful for offers of help.

Laura is taking part in a charity fair on 8th July in Sussex and would be grateful for gifts of unwanted jewellery.  Please send before end of June to 26 Portway, Steyning, BN44 3QF.

Next meeting will be 24/25 June at Loudwater.
